Everywhere you go in Rome there is so much beauty and charm. Every structure is carved with immense detail and precision. Learning about Roman culture and seeing ancient history before me was an awe-inspiring experience. Rome lives on thousands of years later, and will continue to ignite within our hearts a love for the “Eternal City.” See below for tips to make your next trip to Rome the best experience!
1. See Palatine Hill First
When you plan your visit to the Roman Forum and Colosseum, put Palatine Hill at the top of your list. You’ll avoid most of the crowds and experience much better views of the sites (see feature photo for Palatine Hill).
2. ATMs vs Currency Exchange Stores
Currency stores charge high fees to exchange money, but ATMs typically offer a better rate.
3. Pack Light
Anytime you go to Europe you need to pack light. On trains, luggage is placed overhead or in between seats (small to medium size suitcase will fit). If someone offers to help you with your bags, they will expect a tip.
4. Get a Prepaid Phone Plan
To avoid high international charges on your cell phone, be sure to get a prepaid plan with a local carrier. Phone carriers are typically at the train station so you can take care of getting your phone set up on your way to the city. You have two options for a prepaid plan:
- If you do not own your phone and you are still making payments on it, you’ll need to bring an unlocked phone for a SIM card to be put in, and if you don’t have one, you can easily find one on EBay.
- If you own your phone, you can have your carrier unlock it for you. Plan to do this before you leave so you don’t have to worry about it on your trip.
5. Book a Hotel in the Center of the City
If you stay downtown, you can walk to many of the ancient sites a short distance away. This will allow for more time to explore and save money on fares.
Buon viaggio!
